My Shepherd has led me safely all of my life, even during those times when I could not see. And especially during those times when I wandered away from the safety of the fold. He would leave the other sheep to find me. (Luke 15:3-7) He continually pursues my heart, both during times of trial as well as during those times when I am walking in disobedience. He promises that He will be with me in my dark season.
In the NIV, the “valley” is referred to as the valley of death. It is a place surrounded by deep darkness and despair. A place where one might feel lost or alone, as if the entire world has caved in upon you and you lie crushed under the weight of it. I know. I’ve been there. Many years ago I walked through a valley of depression. I thought I would die. I did not understand how a woman who loved God could end up in such a fragile state. But My Shepherd, He was there. Oh, I did not always see Him, and I rarely felt His presence during that season, but I trusted His Word that assured me that He was with me, even in the midst of darkness.
Today I felt led to share with you some of the cross referencing scriptures for this verse. Many of these promises got me through my dark valley and I am praying they will bless and encourage your heart today.
The LORD, He is my deliverer.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me. (Psalm 138:7)
The LORD, He rescues me.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. (Psalm 40:2)
The LORD, He is for me.
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? (Psalm 118:6)
The LORD, He is my protection.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. (Isaiah 43:2)
The LORD, He is my strength.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10)
The LORD, He is my light.
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)
Next week, we will discuss His rod and His staff (verse 4b). Good stuff! Be sure to stop over to Kerri’s place today to read her thoughts on this portion of scripture. And if you wrote a post, be sure to link up, or interact with us through comments. We would love to know your thoughts.
