Five Minute Friday: Graceful

Today I am joining Lisa-Jo and others for the 5 Minute Friday where we are given a word prompt and write for just 5 minutes simply for the joy of writing. No editing or backtracking necessary. No need to be perfect. Just words freely flowing from my heart to yours.

Graceful

Growing up I always admired dancers and synchronized swimmers.  They moved with such grace and ease.  To be graceful was something that I always had to work at.  As a child, I had moments of clumsiness.  I could trip over my own two feet, or walk into walls when I wasn’t looking.  As a teen, I roller skated competitively, and learned how to glide across the skating floor with fluidity of movement.  A few years ago, I led a praise dance team at church.  Although I had no formal training, I relied on the Holy Spirit for the graceful movement to be applied to the dance.

God desires that my walk with Him be filled with graceful movement — light on my feet, always moving toward Him, moving at the sound of His voice.  The Lord and I, moving together as one, flowing effortless across this dance floor called life.  But when I choose to step outside of His will, or move away from the sound of His voice, my steps become rushed, hard, bulky.  My graceful and effortless movements soon replace themselves with the pounding and stomping of my own two feet as I rush hurriedly through life.  I long for graceful movement once again.

I desire to yield, so that once again my steps would be graceful, full of grace.  I don’t want to strive to move here or there.  I only want to move at the sound of His voice. For when I do, I become light on my feet, my steps once again flowing freely in complete unison with the One leads me.

Five Minute Friday: Change

Change

Change.  It’s unavoidable.  One cannot live life without encountering this often unwelcome visitor.  It can come at any time, unannounced, causing you to scurry to keep the memories alive in the moment, before everything changes.  At times, it arrives with such force that it throws you off of your footing, leaving you dropping to your knees in prayer to the Only One who never changes.  Still, at other times it creaps in quietly, as soft as the morning sunrise and before you know it everything changes.

In the blink of an eye it all can change. Life as we know it becomes the life that once was.

I never get too excited about change.  I like routine, knowing one day from the next how it will all play out. I have experienced change in all facets.  Life changes, as quickly as the seasons  — Winter turns to Spring and behold all things become new. Spring spills into Summer where life is lived carefree with the sun beating down on our backs.  Summer becomes the Fall, where the leaves change, turning colors and you realize that Winter is once again around the corner.

In life, change is unavoidable.  I can either accept it with clenched jaw and fist, or I can open my hands and commit every season to the One who never changes.

JOIN

As a teenager, I strived to belong, so I would continually join groups in search of love and acceptance.  When I was in high school, I joined the track team, the Latino Club, the Yearbook group and the Senior trip planners, all in an effort to belong.

In 2008, I joined another group of individuals, women of all ages and from all a walks of life, with one common purpose — to write to encourage the hearts of other women.  I joined Blogger back them and starting writing in white space when I thought no one was reading.  I remember the day I received my first follower, and my first comment.  I thought I had arrived.

Several months ago, I stumbled upon Lisa-Jo’s blog.  Another blogger had posted about a 5 minute writing exercise and asked if we would join her.  I headed over but was hesitant to join in.  As I browsed the list of bloggers who had already joined, I was a little intimated.  But the words that these women wrote touched my heart deeply.  I was compelled to join in, and now I’m hooked.  I’ve joined for life and no one can keep me away.

Here we are, a community of women, all linking up to share our heart on just one word.  I never thought I would find so much love and acceptance from a 5 minute writing exercise.  These women have become some of my closest blogging friends.  I am so thankful I joined in.

Will you join me for the 5 Minute Friday?  It’s not scary, I promise.  Just one write, for just 5 minutes, and you will be hooked.

Stretch Me Lord!

TODAY’S PROMPT:  STRETCH

When my feet hit the floor each morning, one of the first things I like to do is stretch. There is something about expanding my muscles that allows me to feel prepared to begin each day. When I stretch, my aches and pains seem to disappear.  I stand, feet firmly planted on the ground.  Lifting my arms up to the heavens, I inhale deeply, and midway through the stretch, I exhale loudly as my voice responds to the stretch.

God has a way of stretching me.  Like a rubber band, I feel stretched at times. He calls me to exercise muscles that I’ve never used before.  At first, I shrink back, comfortable to be left in the place where I’ve already been.  But He continues to call me up, and out, and forward.  I want to stretch you beyond your abilities.  I want you to reach farther, to touch heaven.”

Although the stretch is often painful, He promises that I will never be broken, never be torn beyond repair.  The stretch enlarges my heart and opens me wide to receive all that He has prepared for me.

Stretch me Lord!  I am willing.

Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.   (Isaiah 54:2 NIV)

Connect

CONNECT

Within every woman is an intense desire connect.  There is a longing to know and be known.  And although God is the one who ultimately fulfills that empty place in my heart, there is a community of women here who I have grown to love and appreciate.  Our hearts have been connected by the words we write and by the encouragement we give in each other’s space.

I come here every day to connect.  And as I share my life with others, I pray that God would use my words to bridge the gap, to repair the broken, to encourage the distraught, to give life to those who feel hopeless.  And then I jump over to their spaces to connect again — to check in and see how life is going, to leave a word of encouragement, and to let them know that they are not alone.

These women have become like sisters to me.  Women who I am fully comfortable sharing my heart with.  Women who God has brought into my life for this season.
