Committed to His Word // Glimpses Link Up

We are on Day 16 of our chronological read of The Message Bible. Having just finished reading Job, I have a lot of thoughts swirling around in my head but they are hard to get out into words.

I have struggled in my reading, even 16 days in. Not so much the getting up to read part, although I’ve missed a day here and there. I struggle with the “sinking in deep” part. Sometimes (most of the time) when I read it’s as if I’m just going through the motions and I’m reminded once again that over the last few years my heart and mind have been somewhat disconnected from the deeper study of God’s Word. Sure I read scripture every day — on my flip calendar, through blogs, in the emails I receive that I subscribe to. In a way, I’ve allowed myself to live on the words of others. I’ve opened up blogs and emails and nodded the affirmative “AMEN” as I’ve read, but I’ve been neglecting the Secret Place.

I love God…with all of my heart, but my heart has been so removed from the deeper things in this season. I go from day to day, doing the same things over and over again and I’ve settled into a comfortable routine. I’m lacking the fire that once burned in my heart. I’m lacking the passion for His presence and the hunger for His Word that was once so evident.  But someone reminded me just the other day that it’s still there — the fire, the passion and the hunger. It’s not that it’s missing from my life altogether, but it’s been diminished by seemingly overwhelming weights of disappointment.

What I am realizing as I set out this year to commit all things to God is that my heart is still hurting, in so many ways. There are so many places of disappointment, so many things I do not understand, so many “why Gods”.  Even though I know it’s normal to ask these questions, I’ve allowed my guilt and shame in the asking to overshadow a God who is very present in my life who wants to teach me how to live in abundance, even in my lack.

God wants to teach me how to live in abundance, even in my lack. #glimpsesofhisbeauty Click To Tweet

This committing, it’s been hard. But I’m not going to stop. I’m going to keep pushing ahead. I may get knocked back a step or two, but I’m going to keep getting up. I know God has given me this Word, because it’s not so much about committing to Him, to His Word, to my home and to health — but it’s about realizing that He’s committed to me. He’s with me in my messy, unordered life and He’s with me in my uncommitted ways.

God is committed to me, despite my messy, unordered life. #glimpsesofhisbeauty Click To Tweet

This week we pick back up again in Genesis and I am truly grateful that God has me on this journey through His Word.

And now I continue to list the beauty that I’m finding in my every day life.

When You Wane In Your Commitment // Glimpses Link Up

It’s Sunday night and I’m thoroughly exhausted. I’ve been on the go all day until about 8:30PM. We had our last Christmas celebration with family and after church I had errands to run, food to make and a house to clean. The Plantar Fasciitis in my left heel is unbearable. I’m thankful for some time to sit, to connect, to read, and just write a little bit.

When my OneWord focus came to me near the end of December, I new it was going to be a challenge. After all, when you have a word like “Commit” and you falter just a little bit, the enemy has a field day.

January 1st came and I was so full of energy. I got up early to read the first day in my chronological journey of The Message Bible, and got my Declutter 365 off to a great start.

January 2nd was a good day. I was on track with my reading and stayed on target with my 15 minute decluttering missions.

January 3rd found me exhausted and really having to push through to get up early to read. There was no decluttering on that day.

January 4th and 5th were hard….just plain hard. I read, but my mind wasn’t absorbing the material. Declutter? No, I was too tired.

After those days, I completely waned in my commitments. I was spent, out of energy and just plain uncommitted.

I allowed the enemy to beat me up for a day or so and then I turned to my friends in the Facebook group I created to read chronologically though the Message. They embraced me, faults and all, and helped me to realize that this is not a race. There are going to be days where I may not feel as though I’m doing anything that I’m supposed to be doing. It may be mechanical, this daily reading. The decluttering may be overwhelming, but I have to keep going. Because when you commit to something, it doesn’t mean things will go perfectly.

When you commit to something it doesn't mean that things will go perfectly. #glimpsesofhisbeauty Click To Tweet

I believe commitment is an attitude of the heart. And sometimes our heart can still long for something even though our mind and actions don’t yet follow. I was so afraid to take on this word for the year because I am so hard on myself when I perform less than perfectly. But it doesn’t mean that I’m not committed. This life is not about performance. It’s a journey.

This life is not about performance. It's a journey. #glimpsesofhisbeauty Click To Tweet

In marriage, we struggle to agree, to put the other first, but we are still committed.
In child rearing, we are stretched and often feel unqualified, but we are still committed.

In life, we are often thrown off path, but we are still committed to finish the race.

I may get knocked down,
but commitment causes me to rise back up again out of the ashes.
I may get discouraged,
but commitment causes me to reach down deep for the light of His hope.
I may get lazy in attitude,
but commitment stirs my heart to repentance and helps me begin again.

So today, on January 9th, I’m beginning again. My word this year is COMMIT and I am taking two steps forward, after having taken several back, and allowing Him to guide me back to the commitments I made just one weak ago.

And now I continue to list the beauty that I’m finding in my every day life.

Heart, Home & Health // Glimpses Link Up

Happy New Years my beautiful friends!

Even though I am thankful that 2016 is behind me, I wouldn’t be the person I am today without having the experiences and the challenges that I did last year. I have grown in my reliance on the Lord in difficult situations as I continually lay my desires at His feet, trusting Him in all situations. Despite hardship, I recognize that God has been good to me.

Despite hardship, I recognize that God has been good to me. #glimpsesofhisbeauty Click To Tweet

Although I do not make resolutions, I am setting a few goals for myself this year. For 2017, God has called me to commit all areas of my life to Him. You can read about my One Word choice and how it found me here.

Today, God has been revealing in greater detail three distinct areas He’s called me to focus on this year.

In order to commit my heart fully to God, I must engage myself in daily reading of His Word and prayer. I was not always on target with this last year. Matter of fact, I would allow days to go by at a time before allowing the Holy Spirit to bring fresh revelation from His Word.

In order to help me accomplish this, I will be committing to read chronologically through the Message Bible this year. I have never read The Message Bible, and already on day one, my heart is coming alive as I am reading. This is helping me to naturally flow into prayer and thanksgiving.

If you’d like to join me, I have a Facebook group for those reading chronologically through The Message this year. Click the image below to request to join the group.

In order to commit my home fully to God, I must give greater time and attention to my family, and gain control over the mess in my home. I can tend to be a little selfish with my time. It’s hard working full time, homeschooling and trying to run a blog. But my family comes first next to God, so I must schedule my time better in order to give them the time and attention they deserve.

One thing I am doing to gain control over my mess is by participating in the Declutter 365: A Year of 15 Minute Decluttering Missions. I just started today by preparing my sale and donation bins, and already they are both almost half full. Each day I will do a 15 minute task to declutter an area in my home. I can’t wait to see what I accomplish!

In order to commit my health fully to God, I must begin to eat better, exercise and get more sleep. This is an ongoing area of struggle for me, but I am going to really try to focus on eating healthy and nutritional foods, walking and going to bed a little earlier (which is so hard since I’m such a night owl).

One thing I am doing to help me in this area is by trying to incorporate more whole foods into my diet, abstaining from processed sugar and drinking more water.

If I can stay on track with these goals, I will have a full heart, a peaceful home and restored health in 2017.

And now I continue to list the beauty that I’m finding in my every day life.

Glimpses #251-260

251. Lighter days at work so I can clean and organize my desk.
252. Fun and laughter with co-workers.
253. God giving me a job that I honestly love.
254. A monetary donation from a person I’ve never met who lives in Hungary.
255. All His promises are YES and AMEN!
256. A renewed focus for 2017!
257. He enlarges my capacity to receive more from Him.
258. I need Thee every hour!
259. Behold! He makes ALL things NEW!
260. Putting behind the past, and moving forward with hope and expectation.

Have you made any goals for this New Year? I would love for you to share in the comments below.

Committing My Way To The Lord // One Word 2017

Since 2011, with the exception of one year, I’ve chosen a One Word focus. In the earlier years, it was a word that I picked and desired to focus on, but in the later years, it was a word that found me, one I believe that was sent directly by the Lord. Some of my words in the past have been Constant, Pursue, Simply, Content and Steadfast.

I pretty much decided that I would not have a One Word focus for 2017. Over the last couple of years I haven’t felt like I was allowing God to teach me all that He desired to through these words. But one evening, while writing this Five Minute Friday post, my word came to me out of no where. It took me by surprise but I knew that it was directly from God. It was in this phrase that the Lord spoke ever so clearly about what my focus would be in 2017:

Now is the time to commit.

This year, the Lord is calling me to commit myself fully to Him. This past year I’ve been a little slothful in my dedication and commitment to reading the Word, to prayer, to family etc. I have had times of self-absorption where I just wanted to crawl under a rock and continue to allow the world to pass me by.

Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. (Psalm 37:5 ESV)

Through this word, I believe the Lord is calling me to,

Commit myself fully to Him through dedicated prayer and Bible reading.
Commit myself to my family, putting them first next to God.
Commit myself to health through whole eating and exercise.

I believe there are other areas of my life that God is calling me to commit fully to Him. Although this may not be an easy journey as there are so many things fighting for my attention, I trust that God will be with me every step. I know that I am on my way to living a more abundant life as a result of my renewed commitment to Christ and dedication to all that He is calling me to do.

An Invitation for You!

One of the ways in which I will be committing myself to the Lord in the coming year is in giving Him the first fruits of my day through dedicated prayer and Bible reading. I’ve gotten away from this and my heart desperately needs it. In order to help me to be successful on this journey, I am committing to read God’s Word chronologically using The Message Bible. I’ve owned a Message Bible for several years, but have never read it, with the exception of looking up scripture here and there.

This is how my 2017 scripture focus reads in The Message:

Open up before God, keep nothing back;
he’ll do whatever needs to be done:
(Psalm 37:5 The Message)

I would love to invite you to join my Facebook Group. This group will be a place to share insights and encourage one another on this journey. The only requirement is that you plan to read chronologically using The Message Bible. Just follow the link and request to join!

Have you chosen a One Word focus for 2017? I would love to know what it is and how it found you! Be sure to leave a comment so that I can visit you!
