I am an artist. It has taken me a long time to be able to say it, and even longer to believe it about myself. In many ways, I still do not see myself as one who does any one thing well. I get side tracked by comparison and “not good enough” and then my eyes become fixed on the art that everyone else is making and I lose the ability to see my own art as good.
I am learning that art is not necessarily what I do, although this can be true. I am a painter, singer and writer all of which are artistic forms of expression. But as I’ve been battling through a season of being still, laying down and giving things up, I’ve lost sight of my art. As things are stripped away, I am becoming more and more aware that art is much more about who I am and not so much about what I do.
I, and you, we are a living, breathing offering of art to the world.
We are creative beings, fashioned together by a creative God. He who spoke the world into existence, and created life by His very breath, He created you and me. We are His workmanship, created by His very hand. We are art, put together by the Master Craftsman. We were born to make art, but we were also born to live art, all to the glory of His Name.
In reading Emily Freeman’s A Million Little Ways: Uncover The Art You Were Made To Live I am learning that although I can do art, I was born to be art. And this statement got me thinking: What is the art that I am offering to the world today? Besides the painting, singing and writing art, what art am I lifting up so that God might be glorified?
This has been a hard question to answer. I feel numb when it comes to what meager offerings I have to give. I don’t feel a stirring in my heart, but I want to. I want to know what it is I was created for. But I am reminded that as I live my life, striving to bring Him glory in all that I do, that my art will come out in a not just one or two ways, but a million little ways.
My heart desperately needs to be awakened to this truth. I need to grab a hold of the fact that I am a living, breathing art piece, fashioned by the had of a creative God, to reflect His glory on the earth.
It’s time to live as though we believe we have something to offer. It is time to release our authentic selves into the world. Because it isn’t only the painters who are allowed to be expressive, it isn’t only the musicians who can touch our souls, it isn’t only the novelists who can inspire us to dream. – A Million Little Ways: Uncover The Art You Were Made To Live.
Do you believe that you were created to express yourself? Do you believe that you can touch the soul of another with your words? Do you believe that you can inspire others to dream simply by being the living art that you were created to be?
My prayer for you (and me):
Heavenly Father, awaken the hearts of Your daughters to the art that you have created us to be. Give us a glimpse of the creative work that you have placed inside each of us, and help us to walk it out. Show us this art that we were not only made to do, but born to live. We choose to believe that we were fashioned by Your hand with the purpose of bringing Your glory to this earth. In all that we do Father, may You be glorified, and may we be living art, reflecting Your glorious light, to those around us.
This is the first post in a series entitled Becoming Living Art. Each Monday I will share what God has revealed to my own heart while reading through Emily Freeman’s A Million Little Ways: Uncover The Art You Were Made To Live. I was not paid in any way for my thoughts or quotes. I would highly recommend you read the book. It’s really good.
