Time To Begin
I haven’t always had a weight issue. Matter of fact, in my adolescent years I considered myself one of the thinner girls. I didn’t ever have to worry about what I ate or how much I ate. Fast forward to my mid-20’s to mid-30’s and four babies later, the weight has never really come off. One thing that I believe attributed to this is that all my life I’ve had sedentary jobs — office and secretarial where 90% of my day was/is sitting. Although I was fairly active in high school (P.E., track, roller skating) I cannot say that I have a love relationship with anything strenuous these days.
I have been on diets before, matter of fact, I’ve probably tried them all. I lost weight, gained it back, lost it again, gained it back; thus I became a “yo-yo dieter” bouncing from one diet fad to the next. Because I am an emotional eater, when life gets stressful, the first thing I go to is food. Can anyone relate?
Here I am in my mid-50’s and I am finally facing the demon of my eating habits and lack of movement square in the face. Last September I joined Weight Watchers and lost 17lbs in just about three months. It’s a great program; however it is a little outside my budget to attend meetings. Community is huge for me in every aspect of my life. So when I decided I couldn’t sustain attending WW meetings for the long haul, I joined an App-based program which teaches a lot about the phsycological aspects of eating and I am learning so much about why I eat they way I do! I’m still losing, down almost 27lbs! I’m not after another weight loss gimmick, but rather I’m on a slow and steady journey towards better health and self-confidence.
I'm not after another weight loss gimmick, but rather I'm on a slow and steady journey towards better health and self-confidence. Click To TweetIt all started with the desire to begin, to take a step and risk failing, as I have so many times before. I am thankful for a community of people, both in person and on line, that are there to support me and hold me accountable.
How are you doing in your own journey towards health? What is one thing you can do today to better your tomorrow? How will you begin? I’d love for you to leave a comment so that we can chat more.

i’m looking forward to this series barbie. i also was the skinny kid in school. didn’t gain much weight until i was in my 50’s and had a medication change. ugh! i finally figured out how to lose it, but later, had some challenges and gained again. didn’t lose as easily in my 60’s. now i’m a mess. need to lose a good 20#. probably low carb diet would work. just need to do it!
My weight wasn’t really a problem until I stopped nursing about four years ago and had massive hormonal changes (menopause). I guess I have to eat like a bird & exercise daily if I want to ever be fit again. Tonight I asked a friend if she would be my “sponsor,” & she said yes! She’s truly a health guru. I’m inspired by your self-discipline, Barbie!
Thanks Kristine. It’s hard work, but rewarding. So glad you stopped by!
I am in my late 30’s and the weight I never totally lost the weight I gained when I carried my three babies. I am looking forward to reading this series.
So glad you stopped by Jolene!
I talk about, think about, and recognize my need for exercise if Im to keep up with my young grandsons but have yet to begin! Congratulations on your success and dedication! I admire that!
I have yet to add any real exercise to my routine. I know I need to though!
Weight and looks are such a problem for women, remember though, He looks at hearts, that take a weight off your shoulders.
So true! Thanks Rebecca.
Congrats on your success, and may you continue to succeed on your road to health!
Thanks for stopping by Ruth!
I always had a high metabolism so I never worried about my weight. Though I lost all the pregnancy weight from my first child, my second was a different story. Since then, I’ve gained a few pounds every year until now I’m at the high end of the ideal weight range. I don’t necessarily want to lose any–I just don’t want to gain anymore. My husband finally splurged and bought us a recumbent bike. I’ve been trying to exercise at least 3x a week, and we also have gone to a low carb diet.
Maintaining weight can be just as hard as losing it! Congratulations on the exercise and healthier eating choices. Keep it up!
That’s awesome, Barbie! I’ve seen my weight sneak up a little at a time in my 50’s. 🙁 Last summer I lost a few pounds and it felt so good, but this winter those pounds found me again. I’ll look forward to your series here.
Thanks for stopping by Lisa!
