Today is the beginning of our “Journey through the Song of Songs”. As I’ve been preparing for this, I’ve realized that I will never be able to cover the entirety of every chapter each week. Because of this, I may decide to cover a Chapter over a span of two weeks, as opposed to one. I will let you know if I intend to do that. It just means you will two weeks to share your thoughts on a particular chapter. I have also lined up a couple of guest posts from some of those that I run with at Convergence House of Prayer! I just know you will love what they have to share!
Although I would like to rely mostly on what the Holy Spirit reveals to my own heart on this journey, I am realizing that I have a long way to go in even beginning to understand. And even though I didn’t want this to be a Bible study but more of a “what is God speaking to you” interactive, I think I would be wrong to not give you some good, spiritual insight and teaching when I can. Many of you said you had yet to study this book. So, from time to time, more often than not, I will be referring to portions of the Song of Solomon study by Mike Bickle. Mike has been studying the Song of Solomon for many years and he has such wisdom and insight. He makes all of his resources, including his entire Song of Solomon study, available for download for free. His copyright is the right to copy. So head on over and grab some resources.
Song of Solomon (Chapter 1) – The Divine Kiss of Intimacy.
In order to clearly speak on this verse, I must give you a little background. First, there are two interpretations to the Song of Solomon. The natural interpretation depicts a natural love story between King Solomon and his bride, the Shulamite maiden. It emphasizes biblical principles that honor the beauty of love within marriage. The spiritual interpretation is a symbolic interpretation to see the spiritual truths in our relationship with Jesus behind the natural love story. This is the approach that I would like us to take in this series. While I accept the first interpretation as true and right, I would like us to dig deeper for the greater revelation concerning our relationship with Jesus, our Heavenly Bridegroom.
Without further adieu,
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth—
This passage of scripture refers to the Divine Kiss of the Word of God upon the believer. There are three types of kisses referred to in scripture: the kiss on the cheek of a friend, the kiss on the feet of a servant and the kiss of the mouth which speaks of holy married love or intimacy. Here in this verse, the maiden is requesting the kisses of the King’s mouth. In the spiritual interpretation, she asks God the Father to let Jesus, the Son, kiss her with the kisses of His mouth (Word of God). The Word of God is what proceeds out of the mouth of God. We, as children of God, must live our lives by every word that comes from the mouth of God:
That He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD. (Deut. 8:3)
The kiss refers to the Divine kiss of intimacy. It’s the intimate Kiss of the Bridegroom King (Jesus) upon His Beloved Bride (you, me – the Church). I love how Mike Bickle explains the divine kiss:
The Divine kiss is a metaphor for intimacy with God. We are to think of God’s hand touching our heart by the Holy Spirit to expand our capacity to receive His love and to give ourselves back to Him in love. It speaks God’s invitation to go deep with Jesus. The kisses of His mouth speak of the release of the Word of God that tenderizes our hearts in the love of God. We are NOT to think of kissing Jesus on the mouth. This is entirely outside the boundaries of God’s Word. We renounce all interpretations of the “kisses of the Word” that come from sensual imagination. – Mike Bickle
The Word of God is life to my spirit. I have been walking in the the reality of seeing the fulfillment of this scripture in my own life. I am continually asking Jesus to come and kiss me with the kisses of His Word. I want to breathe Him in. I want to be so full of His Word that it is the only thing that proceeds out of my own mouth. I must have more revelation of God’s Word. It is living and active inside of me. It is only through the divine kiss of intimacy with Jesus, through the Word of God, that I receive this revelation.
What are some practical applications to seeking the kisses of God’s Word upon our life?
- Ask! The cry for the kisses of God’s Word is the same reality as living before the audience of One. We must have Jesus (the Word of God) above all other things in our life.
- Meditate. We receive the kisses of God’s Word by pray-reading God’s Word or in meditation on it as we set our heart to receive the deepest things that God will give us.
- Speak. In times of temptation, we speak this truth before the Lord. We say, “I will not yield to sin. Father let Him kiss me. My life is about receiving the kisses of God’s Word. This is who I am.” When people mistreat us. We declare, “My life is not primarily about being more popular, I live for the kisses of God’s Word.”
WOW, there is so much depth that I haven’t even touched on. I didn’t even get to that latter portion of this verse, which in and of itself is an entirely different post. So next week, I will cover the second part of verse 1, “for your love is better than wine”.
